Brief Job Description (essential functions of the Job):
The City of Boston’s Environment Department is looking for a driven individual to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy in Boston buildings. The Climate and Energy Outreach Program Coordinator will be responsible for managing energy efficiency programs and developing new strategies to make clean energy more accessible, particularly for Boston residents and small businesses, implementing and expanding existing outreach strategies, creating more opportunities for participation in energy programs, and researching policies that support those goals. The right candidate will be a strong communicator and problem-solver. The coordinator must be also be comfortable working across teams and developing relationships with external partners.
The City’s energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, including Renew Boston, are essential components of the City’s Climate Action Plan and Mayor Walsh’s carbon-neutrality initiative. In partnership with Mass Save, Eversource, and National Grid, the Environment Department educates and connects Boston’s residents and businesses with energy efficiency and renewable energy resources such as energy assessments and incentive programs for insulation work and heating system replacements.
The Climate and Energy Outreach Program Coordinator will work closely with the Climate and Buildings Program Manager and the Greenovate Program Manager to develop and implement new and innovative outreach strategies for energy programs, online and offline. The Fellow should be just as comfortable developing a digital marketing campaign as the fellow is leading a community workshop.
- Develops and executes a work plan to identify and engage key community stakeholders.
- Works closely with utility partners, property and business owners, landlords, and renters to ease the adoption of energy efficiency programs and services.
- Works closely with our existing partners to help streamline complex energy efficiency and renewable energy programs and services and developing new partnerships to expand the reach of the program.
- Coordinates with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, the Commonwealth’s Energy Efficiency Advisory Council, and with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center in conjunction with their development of energy efficiency and renewable energy policies and programs.
- Communicates complex energy and climate issues in understandable and engaging ways.
- Tracks and reports metrics associated with Boston’s Climate Action Plan and other goals.
- Works closely with department members to write content for the energy and climate program web pages, blog posts, event invites, and social media platforms
- Writes emails, newsletters, and e-vites.
- Writes content for offline outreach materials such as factsheets, brochures, posters, etc.
- Tests digital strategies for reaching new audiences.
- Participates in and leading workshops in target neighborhoods and communities.
- Develops in-person workshop curriculum and presentations.
- Addresses energy and climate questions and concerns in a one-on-one or group setting.
- Coordinates energy outreach strategies with those of other programs related to Boston’s Climate Action Plan.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- Applicant must have at least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience working in a community setting (e.g. nonprofit,, volunteer, student or religious group); experience with program design and development preferred. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred, and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. A master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience.
- Experience in renewable energy, energy efficiency, affordable housing or a related field preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to commit to a team-oriented task or project.
- Possess active listening skills that can be applied to community concerns from the position of a municipal employee.
- Experience with online communications channels and social media.
- Ability to work offsite and after hours, occasionally on weekends, on an at-need basis and with advance notice.
- Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts Driver’s License for use of the City’s Fleet Hub or have reliable transportation.
- Candidates that are bilingual (speaking, reading, writing and translation) will be highly considered.
- Candidates with a strong knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods will be highly considered.
- Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.
Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Non Graded $56,000/year
Hours per week: 35
