Research Assistant Needed
Part-time paid Internship: Learning from recreation and stewardship opportunities in Dundee Island Park, Passaic, New Jersey.
Helping the residents of the New York / New Jersey Harbor Estuary realize the benefits of the Clean Water Act requires skilled and innovative professionals. A diverse set of stakeholders, aging infrastructure, complex ecology and changing climate are just some of the challenges posed by this unique urban environment. The New York – New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP), Hudson River Foundation, and the USDA Forest Service are working together on addressing some of these challenges by identifying the best tools for creating environmental stewardship within communities in this region.
Project Description: The study site is the waterfront area near Dundee Island Park along the Lower Passaic River in New Jersey. The Lower Passaic River, a 17 mile tidal stretch from Dundee Dam in Clifton, NJ, to Newark Bay, is one of the 19 Designated Urban Waters Locations part of the Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP). This partnership is made up of federal agencies and NGOs, including the New York – New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program, who collaboratively seek to reconnect urban communities, particularly those that are overburdened or economically distressed, with their waterways. As such, there is a heightened awareness around the need to engage communities regarding the use, meaning and potential stewardship of these urban waterways. Project interns will work with researchers from the Forest Service’s NYC Urban Field Station and HEP to assess how waterfront park visitors are using the area for recreation and stewardship. The work will involve surveying participants on one Saturday in April and two Saturdays in June. It will also include additional site visits to the area to make field observations and to interview key stakeholders in the region. Interns will be responsible for inputting data in the project database and helping to write brief project summaries for incorporation into a larger report and potential publication. A second round of data collection will take place in the late summer / early fall. Research interns will be responsible for collecting this data from brief phone interviews.
Successful candidates will have excellent organizational, communication and writing skills. Candidates will be enthusiastic and willing to learn about the community surrounding Dundee Island Park and how to best reflect the impacts that fostering environmental stewardship can create on its Passaic residents.
Applicants are expected to have or be pursuing a degree in environmental science, urban planning, geography, sociology, urban studies, natural resource / parks management, environmental education or a related field and have some relevant work experience. This is a paid temporary position where interns will work as needed to carry out required tasks, including being able to attend events scheduled to take place on April 27th, June 1st and June 8th 2019. Work on the project will extend in the fall of 2019 and require some additional time for supplemental data collection and writing. We anticipate research assistants to spend up to 160 intermittent hours (mix of on-site & off-site) over the eight months.
